Born on January 11, some decades ago, Toyin Adebola, who is from Ogun State, had his secondary education at Government Secondary School, Gwammaja, and ended up at the Government Technical College, Wudil, Kano. His tertiary education was at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he read technical education. Family background: I’m from a polygamous home. I’m the first born of my father. My father worked and retired as a staff of the Ministry of Education, Kano and my mother worked with The Nigerian Aviation Company (NACO), also in Kano until she retired about two years ago.

Fashion: It has different interpretations depending on who is creating it, but for me, I think fashion is an expression of who you are, well expressed in what you are wearing. I don’t go with what’s in vogue, for what is in vogue for me is what I am comfortable with!

Style of dressing: English; a shirt and a tie, that’s me! But occasionally, I do some native stuff.

Uniqueness of style: Everything about me is basically different. My carriage stands me out. I also hate conforming to what’s in vogue.

Favourite colour: I love brilliant colours, to be precise. I like black and red. I also like white and purple because they are sweet and strong. I love them combined not specific.

Favourite piece of clothing: A nice shirt and trouser.

Stylish icon(s): Maxwell, he dresses so beautifully. Most times, he’s always on a nice shirt on trousers with jacket. When you see him, one has no choice but to love and respect him.

Role model(s): Rev. Sam Adeyemi, he is my ultimate role model and then musically, it’s Fred Hammond.

Favourite food: Vegetable Salad.

Favourite designer(s): Base London, because they are not the regular designers. They have very unique designs of Wristwatches and Shoes and I love them because they are not very popular.

Most expensive item: My house!

Most cherished possession: God.

Describe yourself in three words: Passionate, powerful and simple.

Turn on: When everything is just in order

Turn off: Disorderliness.

Happiest moment(s): When I got a job in Conoil because I waited almost 15 years for that.

Embarrassing moment(s): When my visa to United States was turned down the second time.

Favourite food: Vegetable Salad.

Favourite designer(s): Base London, because they are not the regular designers. They have very unique designs of Wristwatches and Shoes and I love them because they are not very popular.

Philosophy of life: Life is like one’s best currency. It’s ones most valuable asset, so spend it wisely, do not waste time and be as productive as you can.

If you were given an opportunity to change something in Nigeria, what would it be? Our mindset, it is terrible!

If it is comfy, it’s...Biola

BIOLA Boris is a model. Her career on the runway started when she left secondary school. While still waiting for admission into university, the Lagos State-born lady and the last of her parents’ five children had begun to strut the runway with ease and confidence, which surprised many . The graduate of Industrial Relations and Personnel Management (IRPM), who is pursuing a master’s degree in Public and International Affairs at the University of Lagos, began her modeling career with Dakova, who gave her the first break because he liked her shoulder, which he called Hanger. Leisure time
I play basketball, dance, listen to music and read books. I also give back to the society by giving free grooms to upcoming models in the country.

Philosophy of life
Silence is golden. The less you say, the more intelligent you appear.

What would you like to change in Nigeria?

‘Green... is my number’

IN an attempt to curb scourge of rape in Nigeria, Esther Ijewere began the Walk Against Rape (WAR). The graduate of Sociology from the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, who also has a diploma in Marketing and Computer programming from the same institution, attended Acada Nursery and Primary School, Ikotun and St. Saviours High School, Ijegun, for her primary and secondary education. The Esan, Edo State lady was born on April 14 in the early 80s. She tells DAMILOLA ADEKOYA what fashion means to her.

Definition of fashion:
It means looking good, especially when everything is in the right place.

Style of dressing:
I’m a simple and casual person, however, because of the project I’m involved in, I make conscious effort to mind the way I dress. I just go on a shirt or a round neck blouse with inscriptions on it; the positive ones, I mean, with a pair of jeans.

Uniqueness of style:
I have brown eyes and most times, I try to blend the colour of my hair with my eyes.

Favourite colour:
I’m a green person. I love it because I connect with the colour any day, anytime; even spiritually. When I’m wearing a green colour, I’m always very confident. Even when I’m depressed, if I set eyes on green, I’m always relieved.

Favourite designer(s):
I love Cholle. Their brands are unique.

Stylish icon(s):
Kate Henshaw. She’s my mentor. Her dressing speaks at all times.

Oh! My lip-gloss. I’m an addict; you can’t just meet me without it. My bible also, I cherish it so much.

Most expensive item:
That would be an Annie Michelle shoe I just bought. I’m not bothered about the price; I just love it.

Food:
It’s plantain.

Turn on:
When I’m in the midst of happy people, then I have no choice other than to be turned on. When I also meet sincere and friendly people, I get turned on.

Turn off:
Hypocrites! People who say they are something and I later find out that they are not; I can’t stand them. I call them wanna be people. I also hate liars, especially people who are close to me.

Happiest moment(s):
It was when I was able to hold a mentorship programme at the National Stadium, Surulere, with over a thousand secondary school students and celebrities in attendance. God really proved himself at the programme.

Most embarrassing moment(s):
It was the day I slapped my younger sister in public and I got mine back instantly. It was a very embarrassing scene.

Your project:
The project was borne out of passion and not that I was victim of rape. The project is a demonstration for sexually abused women, particularly young girls within the ages of three and 15 years, specifically, with the aim of informing the society and addressing rape and also, taking people from the level of self-denial to self-confidence and self-esteem.

Inspirations:
I’m a woman and a passionate Nigerian, I just felt I had to set the pace and give back to the society. And to carry on with life, it’s just God in all remifications.

Philosophy of life
Life to me, is a small world, just be good to everybody.

If you were given an opportunity to change something in Nigeria, what would it be?
Our leaders. I’ll flush out old people and replace them with the young and energetic ones, who will be fit to handle the position and capable to take the country to the next level.

Their most memorable Christmas... and their wish for 2010

Compiled by Shaibu Husseini & Damilola Adekoya

Actress GRACE AMAH
‘I think it is going to be this one because I am travelling to Calabar for the Festival. I have never had the opportunity to celebrate Christmas on this scale. It’s either I am working or we just do the normal stay at home, eat rice and visit friends and what have you. But I am really looking forward to this trip to Calabar. It is going to be special for me. My brothers and sisters will be there and then I will be part of the carnival. As for if I can still go all out to buy a Christmas dress? Oh, yes I can; if I am moved but I can’t even remember when last I bought a Christmas dress for myself. But if I feel like, I could do that — just something special for myself. So I can, but it was a normal thing then when we were growing up. And then it was wonderful and fun. We always looked forward to Christmas as kids and young people because that was the time to go shopping with mum to pick clothes and Christmas shoes and all that. So it was fun. And on that day, we will eat and then go visiting. In terms of New Year resolution, I think it is to accomplish all those things I couldn’t do this year. Basically to meet up with all those things I couldn’t meet up with this year. I will take out more time to be able to accomplish them. It is also going to be more like being nice to people….. well, continue to be nice to people’.

Actress FUNKE AKINDELE
‘Talking about my most memorable Christmas, I don’t think I have any one I can really say is my most memorable. May be as a child, and of course to us then Christmas was always fun. We always looked forward to Boxing Day when we would have a party in my uncle’s place. But generally, there is nothing special. We are so simple in our house. We just stay indoors, cook, eat and receive friends who visited us. I am not particularly an outdoor person, so I don’t really go out as such. I take every Christmas as it comes. I stay with my family at home, eat rice, chicken and drink. And in terms of dressing, I don’t think I have ever gone out of my way to buy a dress for Christmas since I became an adult. The only thing I consciously do is to take care of my hair; and nails and it is like that for all celebrations. Of course, I believe in New Year resolutions. Because what it entails is a conscious effort to look back at what you have achieved so far in 2009 and look at where you want to be in 2010. You identify your shortcomings and try to make amends and improve on your strong areas. For me, what I decided to do in 2010 is to take things very, very easy. There is no hurry in life. It is going to be one thing at a time for me. There is no rush anymore; after all, we rush because we have life. What If we are not alive?’
Actor, EMEKA OSSAI
Well I think my most memorable Christmas will be two years ago, which was the Christmas period that I was married again. My wedding was on the 27th and 28th of December 2007 and it was memorable, not that I had all the fun in my life, but I spent the time getting ready for my marriage instead of having fun as every other person would have done. My fun was supposed to be put on hold because of my marriage prep. It always reminds me of a Christmas that was delayed because of my marriage but eventually, it was very enjoyable. I don’t subscribe to all the talks about New Year resolutions. When most people make resolutions, sooner or later they go back to what they had said they would not do. I don’t think people should wait for a particular time to make resolutions. I believe resolutions can be made at any time. It doesn’t have to be in the New Year. If you are doing something that is not right for you, I am sure that you will not continue doing it because you are waiting for the year to come to an end before you make amends.

Philosophy of life

I don’t believe that because I look good, then I can have an advantage over anybody. The only advantage I have over any other person is my mind. God gave us equal opportunities, but the way we use it differs.

If you were given a chance to change something in Nigeria, what would it be?

It would be the government. They should be more transparent and more people-oriented. They should try to get foreign ideas and not to be stereotyped. Our rulers travel out of the country and they see what happens in other countries. It doesn’t take them a dime to also apply such ideas here.

If you were given a chance to change something in Nigeria, what would it be?
I will change the mindset of Nigerians because I think changes begin with an individual, who works positively towards changing and branding a new Nigeria. Greed is a major problem in this country and it has to be eradicated. The club, Re-brand Nigeria should also be established in schools and an anthem should also be composed so that it will be sang at the beginning of every meeting held.
With that alone, I think they will always remember that they have something good to do towards Nigeria.
So, I will like to change the mindset of people through music and right now, I’m working on an anthem, to work towards a positive change in the country for a better tomorrow, because tomorrow is bigger than today.

At the age of 12, I noticed I had a gift of being able to express myself in the midst of people. So, with the encouragement I got from people around me, I started miming songs — rap and R n B — before I gradually began to write mine. My songs are based on our cultural values. I also used it to express my life’s experience. I went professionally in 1999 and have performed in various clubs in Apapa and Surulere with artistes such as Baba Fryo. My music is designed to entertain, educate and disseminate value-laden messages.

‘It’s as simple as jeans n’tee… oh, yeah, sneakers’

Adedayo Elusakin, darling of the listeners of Unilag 103.1fm, hails from Ife South, Osun State. Born February 16, 1983, the radio presenter, who is known as Dee-Shark in the mornings and afternoons and Dy, when on night shift, attended Nigerian Airport Authority Staff School, now Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Staff School. He then moved to Federal Government College, Ogbomosho, for his secondary education, before attending the University of Lagos, to study Educational Administration. Dayo, who is in his final year, is also a writer, who sometimes writes for major newspaper anchors the Morning train programme of the station. He tells DAMILOLA ADEKOYA what fashion means to him.

Definition of fashion: To me, it is what a person interprets it to be. Generally, it implies what people can see as regards adornment on a person. It is what you put on.
Style of dressing: It has to be comfortable. Usually, my idea of dressing is a tee shirt, a pair of jeans and sneakers. Uniqueness of style: Apart from the fact that I am someone, soft-spoken and reserved, my friends always say that I have this calmness around me that makes me look high. Favourite piece of clothing: That’s my Adidas-made watch. Favourite colour: It’s blue because I just think it’s a natural and suiting colour for guys. Favourite designer: It could be local or international, as long as it looks good, but very importantly, if comfortable, then I will go for any of it. Favourite food: I don’t have one because I don’t eat that much. Most cherished possession: I don’t really have a most cherished possession because of the implication of that. A friend of mine once told me that what you can’t give out, then you don’t own it. Anything I can’t give away, then, I don’t want to own it. Turn on: I like ideal people actually, but I might not always find ideal people, so, I could go along with polite people. Turn off: Insensitivity. I do not like insensitive acts. When you don’t give much concern about the effects of your actions on other people, it turns me off. Happiest moment: I think it was the day I found out that I was going to be on radio because for me, it has been a long time dream. Most embarrassing moment: I don’t think I can remember. I’m not very central and I don’t venture much. Before I could venture, I think and analyze, so, if I think it’s going to be a problem and it would not work out, then, I don’t venture into it. Describe yourself in three words It’s the word ‘I am different’. When I’m on radio, I always say something that ‘when you’re different, you’re different and let no man turn you otherwise’. I find out that the problem with people is conformity, trying to conform to a standard, people expect you to act in a particular way and you find yourself gradually conforming to be like that. This is not about neglecting sensitivity, just be yourself. When I say I am different, it means I acknowledge my uniqueness, I appreciate it and I’m in love with myself for who and what I am regardless of what anybody says. How do you combine working and schooling?
It has always been a matter of priority. Academic is awesome; it’s a good thing to go to school and get a good degree, but I have a passion and projection towards my future and broadcasting is a major component in my future. It’s not a problem for me to combine both.
Philosophy of life: I don’t really have written constitution as regards my life but there are things that I could regard as unwritten constitution and one of them is which I have said earlier ‘When you’re different you’re different’ and another thing I believe in is that things are not always the way they seem. If you were given an opportunity to change something in Nigeria, what would it be?
I think I will change the way politics is being run here. All this rests on government because if it ensures that the right people get to power, then things will change for the better.

Projection into the future
For me, the best is yet to come because I learn everyday.
Philosophy of life
Life is like a market, when you are through with it, you’ll go back, meaning going back to God. You need to be the best you can and live everyday like it is your last!
